A slew of players teed off in what was the 85^th annual Spring SGANC Club Stroke Play Championship at par-72 RoundHill Country Club in Alamo and par-72 Blackhawk Country Club in Danville.

Taking top honors as Gross overall champion was Butte Creek Country Club member Jim Sands. The Chico resident finished the two-day event, which used the Stableford scoring system, with a total of 57 (30-27). In the Stableford system, scoring is based on the number of strokes taken at each hole. For example, par is 0, 2 points for a birdie and minus-1 point for a bogey, etc.

Sands won by three strokes over runner-up Gil Wymand, who came in at 54 (23-31).

“The greens were great but tough to read. The course is in great shape. It’s much hillier than what I’m used to,” Sands said.

Sands had the low round, carding an 81 using regular scoring. As for what got him going, Sands said pointed towards patience, especially considering the windy conditions and that most of the players in the field were playing the courses for the first time.

“I hit the ball steady on a course that I hadn’t played that much,” Sands said.

In the Gross President’s Flight, Brian Chamberlain shot 50 (23-27) to slip by Buddy Pepp 48 (26-22) by two points. The Gross Governor’s Flight title went to Larry Smyth, who shot 36 (19-17) to clip Fred Bunch, who had 35 (17-18), by one point.

In Gross Super Senior play, John Nash cruised to a 14 point win after scoring 44 (24-20). Finishing in a tie for second at 30 were Donald H. Wahl (15-15) and Fred Quadros (19-11).

The Net overall champion was The Olympic Club member Jack Sweitzer. Sweitzer, who lives in Orinda, won the President’s Flight title with a score of 78 (35-43), defeating runner-up Brian Chamberlain (35-39) by four points.

“The best part of my game was with my irons playing into the greens, which is typically the most inconsistent part of my game,” Sweitzer said. “I was able to stay out of trouble and only carded one double-bogey this afternoon.”

In the Championship Flight, Steve Kislia took the title with a two-day score of 76 (41-35). William Beasley finished second at 72 (38-34), while Ed Anderson took third at 70 (40-30).

The Governor’s Flight title went to Larry Smyth with 67 points (36-31). Smyth just got past Douglas Conklin, who finished at 66 (32-34).

Finishing in a tie for third at 65 were Alan Brodovsky (33-32) and Sam Goby (29-36).

In the Super Senior Flight, John Nash won with a score of 74 (39-35), with Fred Quadros taking runner-up at 68 (38-30).
